The Recovering Project

Although photojournalists and documentary photographers are helping to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic, many of the images they produce are stigmatizing. The countless photographs of slumped-over bodies and those actively injecting fail to convey the humanity of the crisis. In order to amplify the participants' voices and experiences, I took a rare step and invited my collaborators to write their thoughts and feelings by hand on the photographs. In addition you can hear them tell the story through their own words below each picture.

Dave Decourcey

David DeCourcey is a 37-year-old Boston local who currently works at the Devine Recovery Center as a peer to peer specialist. His own experience through recovery allows him to connect deeper with those who come to Devine, as he knows what it's like to not get it right the first time. He has two sons, Joseph (14) and David Jr. (15) who help drive his recovery process. They mean everything to him.

Christian Arthur

Christian Arthur is a 28-year-old student currently attending Boston University. A major component of Christian's recovery was exercising. His intense drive to regain his physical strength was inextricably linked to him reclaiming his mental strength as well. Through poetry, Christian has found a way to release and speak about his experiences in a way that allows him to share them with the community.
